When we got home from church today Elizabeth was singing the primary song,
"I Love To See The Temple". I started singing it with her and she smiled and continued singing. When we stopped singing she said, "I want to be married in the temple. Can I be married in the temple?" I replied that yes she could get married in they temple. For fun I asked her who she wanted to marry and she replied, "I want to marry you!" I said "no, you can't marry me, I am your mother and you need to marry a boy." She thought for just a moment and said, "I want to marry daddy." She ran to where her daddy was and said, "Can I marry you daddy?" Although they were in another room I could hear most of their conversation.
Her daddy replied that she could not marry him and then he proceeded to give her some great council that I am sure will be repeated to our children many times. To summarize , he told Elizabeth that she needs to wait and find someone who treats her really good. He then used "mommy" and "daddy" as an example and asked her if daddy is nice to mommy and then if mommy is nice to daddy. I was happy to hear that she replied "Yes" to both questions. He further advised that she too needs to find someone who treats her really good.
This conversation had so much to offer not only Elizabeth but her daddy and also me. When he asked Elizabeth if daddy treats mommy well I was sure that the answer was a resounding "Yes!" but the question of whether mommy treats daddy well made me pause and ask myself if I am setting the true example I want to set for my daughters in how they will need to treat their future spouses. I concluded that I could do better. I am grateful for these wonderful opportunities we have within our family to teach, to learn, and to grow.
